Four years later
I remember watching this moment live on tv like it was yesterday. I remember my mouth hanging open and thinking that this cannot be happening! On this fourth anniversary, I think that it is important that we take a moment and think about the people that perished on that tragic day. Also, please take a moment to pray for the survivors and everyone who lost friends and family members that day.
As a nation, we were not prepared for what happened on that tragic day four years ago. The important take away from the tragedy is that we learned from it and have taken steps to prevent this from happening again.
Four years later, we are suffering from a natural disaster that we were not prepared for. There are two differences in these disasters that I can see. The obvious is that we feel the man made disaster is worse because it is incomprehensible to most of us that another human would purposely bring that much pain and sorrow to others. The other difference I have seen is that after 9/11 our nation pulled together like never before. Politics, race, wealth, and all other differences were put to the side and we handled the situation as best we could. Our response to the natural disaster was completely opposite. The race card was played early on during the recovery and has not stopped since. Politicians immediately started attacking each other.
The lesson we should have learned from 9/11 should have been that if we pull together as a nation, we can handle anything no matter how difficult. We should stop placing blame on the hurricane recovery efforts and do everything we can to help the people of the Gulf Coast regain their lives. After that, we should learn from what happened so that next time we are better prepared and can show the rest of the world what a truly great country the United States of America really is!
