Rent
I finally got to see Rent last night. I bought it to watch on the plane ride home from Tennessee but ended up sleeping so I finally watched it last night. It was good. I wasn't blown away by the film itself. It is much better as a stage show which was disappointing. However, the vocals in the movie are absolutely amazing! Six of the eight main characters are from the original broadway run. The two additional actresses deserve to stand up with the rest of the cast. They are phenomenal...so much so that I stopped at Wal-Mart this morning to buy the soundtrack. There was one thing about the story that struck me while watching the movie. I saw the musical on Broadway around New Years 2005. It was an awesome show but I thought the show was dated with lyrics like 'living in America at the end of the millennium." I realized though that the message of the story is still as relevant today as ever. I don't know if the story will ever be something that mainstream America will hold dear because of the topical nature of the story but the message of tolerance and understanding of people that may be different from who you might normally associate is awesome!
After my experience having dinner with 3 total strangers coming from very diverse backgrounds, I have quickly realized how much we can learn from others who are different from ourselves. It is very easy to judge someone at first glance....but if you sit down and listen to their story and how they came to be the person they are...you can usually learn a lot and become a better person because of it. Just a thought....

How open minded are you?
You Are 64% Open Minded |
![]() You are a very open minded person, but you're also well grounded. Tolerant and flexible, you appreciate most lifestyles and viewpoints. But you also know where you stand firm, and you can draw that line. You're open to considering every possibility - but in the end, you stand true to yourself. |
Back in the airport
Sitting in the airport in Memphis again this morning. Last night, they had oversold the flight by 7 people and asked for volunteers to give up their seat. In return, they gave us a free ticket anyway in the US/Alaska/Canada. They also put us up in a great hotel and gave us vouchers for dinner and breakfast. I had dinner with some people in the same situation as myself and really had a great time! It was an interesting mix. There was me of course, a 40-45 year old black lady from NY, a 19 year old white male college student, and a 65-70 y/o grandmotherly type. It was great to discuss various topics and hear the comments from the diverse group of people. What a cool way to meet new friends.Mad Cow
While sitting in the airport last night, I happen to catch a report on CNN regarding mad cow disease. I did not realize that for a human to contract this disease, you must eat part of the cow's brain or nervous system. The physician interviewed in the report stated that this should not have widespread results in the U.S. population because our normal eating habits do not include those parts of the cow. Food for thought...oh... no pun intended.Monday, March 13, 2006
Visiting Grandma
I spent the weekend visiting my Grandma. In fact, I am sitting in the floor in the Memphis airport...so my laptop can charge of course...I am going to watch Rent on the flight between Memphis and Charlotte....but I digress. My parents and I had scheduled this weekend a couple months ago to meet in Tennesee and visit while they were on a trip to see the NAIA women's basketball tourney. It turned out to be a good weekend to visit as my Grandma fell a few weeks ago and broke her leg. She ended up having to have surgery and has been in the hospital and will be in the hopsital for a while. Please pray that she will have the strength to make it through this. It is hard to leave every time I have to leave her in this type of condition. On my way home....should make it home to my bed about midnight...I'm ready now!!!
See Mom...and you said spelling was important!

Maybe I am just going through a quarter life crisis
I'm not old enough to be going through a mid-life crisis...so a quarter life crisis is what I will call it. I was reading the post I just wrote about not wanting to grow up. I forgot about the fact that I bought Bon Jovi's greatest hits CD this weekend and have been "jamming" to it ever since!!!!I don't want to grow up....(the Toys R Us theme)
I just got home from Wal-Mart. I know, I know....you don't need me to tell you about every time I go to the store but I just realized that no matter how much I think otherwise...I may not be quite grown up. Below is the list of items I bought:
Fruity Pebbles (aka dinner)
Milk (for the Fruity Pebbles)
Chips Ahoy
Fruit Roll Ups
Coke
Remember, I have no other groceries in the house and these are the only items I bought. I plan to enjoy them!!! I don't ever want to grow up!
Happy Monday!!!

D’oh! More know Simpsons than Constitution
From MSNBC.com...Only one in four Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms in the First Amendment, but more than half can name at least two family members of "The Simpsons" (Lisa, Marge, Maggie, Homer and Bart).
This is really a sad commentary on the state of our country but I have no doubt that this is probably a true statement....read the full story here...
